I have only recently started watching this programme . It,s always screened after I,ve went to bed but I managed to get a hold of all 5 series (ahem )
I was originally drawn to it when a friend played the theme song a few sundays ago . I asumed it was Steve Earle but the singer isn,t him , it's a diffferent version , well at least in the first series . That,s all I,ve watched so far . I understand from another friend that Steve Earle also appears in it . Maybe that's later on . (It is , I've just googled it)
Anyway . It took me a good few episodes to get atuned . What is that language they use ?
I also had a bit of trouble identifying with the characters but again I seem to have grasped it now(I think )

WZ Connection . Dozerman is shaking down some suspects when he calls out " I,m gonna beat his ass like a red headed stepchild " (paraphrased )

Anyone else watched it

I loved The Wire, it was probably the best show ever on HBO, better even than The Sopranos. It took me two seasons to be able to understand all of the language, my wife never did figure it out and quit watching.

The song "Deep down in the hole " is a Tom Waits song .
The first series is performed by "The Blind Boys of Alabama " with a different artist every season . Tom Waits in series 3 and Steve Earle in series 5 .
I,ve finished series 1 and can't wait to get the rest on the DVD player .
I never watched too many of the Soprano,s but if the remaining series are as good as the first I would agree John that it could well be one of the best shows ever

Best show ever on TV, in my opinion. And watching the series DVDs is the best way to experience it -- you can backtrack when you can't follow what's being said to give it another chance. It gets way easier as you go along and get into it. The 5th (final) season wasn't quite up to all the others, but better than anything else around all the same. And taken all together, The Wire is electrifying.

I could never quite bring myself to watch it. It's a little too close to the bone for me because I am a teacher in the Baltimore City schools. My students loved it and would talk about all the story lines.

I was riding on a bus with a group of kids on the way to a field trip and they were all excited because we went by one of the locations where they were filming. The strange thing was that a similar scene was playing out for real on the other side of the street.

I saw Jackson Browne the other night in Baltimore. He commented that The Wire was one of his favorite shows and asked if people in Baltimore realized that the show was filmed there. Homicide was also filmed there.
